Smallwood XC trail network

Huge thank you to Pat Wray, John Krebs and our trail builders for all the amazing work done up at Smallwood.  The new descent from the lookout is officially open.  Watch for the sign "Bigwood" on your way down.  This is a beautiful XC descent with fun, flow'y corners.  Please keep in mind this is a brand new trail and riding when it is too wet or too dry will damage any trail.

There currently is a completed 4km single track XC trail in the sub-alpine that will be extended and link to existing trails to become a 30km loop of XC riding like no where else in nelson.

We are having a trail maintenance day up there on Sunday, July 25th.  Please let Paula (paulaowen@shaw.ca) know if you're interested in helping out.

Kootenay Fat Tire Fest 2010: Call for Volunteers

Do you want to get involved in your community? Do you love fresh air, lots of activity and mountain biking? If you said yes to any of these questions, the Kootenay Fat Tire Fest 2010 needs you! The Nelson Cycling Club's 16th annual event promises to be a fun-filled festival for competitors and spectators alike, but it can't be done without a roster of dedicated volunteers.

Trail and course workers are needed NOW to get this year's trails in shape. During the event we will need a course marshals, first aid attendants, trail crews for set up/tear down, shuttle drivers, new activities, as well as people to help with registration and miscellaneous jobs.

The festival occurs Saturday August 21 and Sunday August 22, 2010 with events in Nelson and at the old Blewett Ski Hill - Morning Mountain. There will be a parade, Criterium Race, "Kootenay Krawl" (slow race), Cross Country and Downhill events for kids from age 3 to 93.

If you would like to get involved please email Kathryn at kdgimages@telus.net and state your name, phone number, email, availability and job(s) you are interested in.

Fat Tire Festival - August 20, 21 and 22

Fat Tire Festival 2010 - August 20, 21 and 22... Save the date!

Look out all you fat tires out there, it's time for you to bring your stoke again to this year's Annual Fat Tire Festival.  It is going to knock your nubs off, all in honour of the late, great, Cam Alexander.

For those of you who don't know, Cam Alexander was an old hand with the bike tools, fantastic rider of old, and an all around inspiring mountain biker.

Cycling had been so good to him that in 1996 Cam decided to stage a festival to bring our community together and celebrate mountain biking in all of its forms.  He wanted to offer a variety of events for all ages and abilities.

Tragically, during a spring ride at Earl Grey Pass, an issue with pedals, a river raging with spring thaw water and debris, brought Cam's life to an abrupt end.

It didn't take long for the cycling community to rally together to bring Cam's fat tire dreams to fruition.  Two months later, the roster of events included the Cam Slam, the Sane and Insane cross-country events, and all in memory of a person loved so dearly.

This year's committee is stoked to bring you more downhill events, a new and totally cool Morning Mountain cross country loop, the fantastically fast crit and many more events for you to choose from.

Fat Tire Festival 2010, August 20, 21, and 22.  Kids bring your parents, parents bring your kids, everyone bring your grandma and pa, this is an event you can all enjoy.  Come on, it's time to get up and ride!

Stay tuned for more info to come on the website!
